What are you thankful for?

At this time of year everyone is talking about Thanksgiving, football & Black Friday Sales.
I think that we should be thankful every day for the small things.  I am thankful for a kiss from my five year old, a smile from the 11 year old.  A husband who can pop a pizza in the oven, on evenings that I am busy.  I am thankful for the nights the puppy decides to sleep all night.  Days like today when the sun is shining and the leaves are so vivid.  I am also thankful that my good friend Gay Lynn is improving and that her chemo is not making her to sick.
My life is so busy at times that I wish for simple days when I can turn off the alarm and snuggle in the cozy warm bed just a little longer.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and that you all have the opportunity to just be still and enjoy the time with those you love.

I made the front cover!

I know I am usually telling you about an article I have written.  This time I am the subject of an article.  If you go to http://nowmagazines.com/onlineeditions/editions/1011weatherford.pdf you can read about some of my activities.

This morning at church people kept stopping me to tell me they read the article.  I was shocked, it just came in the mail yesterday.  I hope you all enjoy it.

Thoughts on writing & this blog

Some days I get down when I realize that I started trying to write in 1994.  If my book were a baby it would be graduating from high school this year.   That book started out as a typical Civil War Historical Romance.  Then in about 1995 I discovered that Time Travel was the hot thing selling so I transformed this story into a time travel.    Then a couple of years later learned that Time Travels were no longer selling so I cut out the time travel elements and went back to the original format.
Fast forward to 1998 when the thing in romance was the modern day cowboy/baby/cop book.  If a book was to sell it had to have one or two of those elements.  Then paranormal & vampire stories were all the rage  and I said this is for the birds.  I am going to write the story I want and not worry about what is the popular thing to write.

In 2000 I had my first child so all my stories revolved around heroines who had babies.   By the time daughter # 2 was born in 2006 I was so sick of trying to follow market trends I just gave up on writing.  Also some where in there my hard drive crashed and my stories were all gone.

2010 I decided the best way for me to write was to blog.  As you can tell I am not posting that often and when I do my post are random, (Hmmm like me) Someone ask me once how do I characterize my blog.  It is not a home decorating blog, or a quilting/sewing blog, nor is it a travel blog, or even a christian devotional blog, certainly not a healthy life style/exercise blog.

So if you are into Sewing/Quilting, crafts, cooking, bible study, writing/reading, genealogy, history, civil war reenacting hang out for a while and I am sure we will cover the topic

Garner Girl has a little bit of all my interest, my followers are few and that is ok.  Because I do this for me.  Sure I would love to have 100's of followers, but I am just fine with the few I have.

Wow all of that to say, I would like to share a cool site I found today.  http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/
Grammar Girl has answers to those grammar questions we struggle with.  I tried to enclose a link I hope it works.

Bragging on another Garner Girl

Can I brag for a minute? It is not often that we have the opportunity to brag that one of our own is a published author. My cousin Keisha who also grew up in the Garner community will soon release her first book. We are all so happy for her, and I just wanted to take the opportunity to toot her horn.
Keisha is an amazing lady who has learned so much about living with diabeties and has written a book to help parents and students learn to prevent this disease. Please check out her website http://stompoutdiabetes.com/

Love ya Keisha and can't wait to get my autographed copy :)

Scrap'n evening in store

I am so excited I am meeting 5 or 6 of the ladies from church to scrapbook tonight. I haven't worked on my scrapbooks in ages. I am torn between working on my 5 year olds baby book and starting to work on photo's from my trip to England, Ireland & Scotland. Hmmm I think the trip is looking pretty good right now. Not that I don't love my baby girl...

But there is a special place in my heart for London.

The Food...

Big Ben....

Parlament...

The Tower Bridge....

Then there is the silly art that just makes me happy....

I usually don't care for cities. But I loved London, and would love to go back and see even more of it. Just tell me when and this girl will be packed and ready to meet you at the airport.

Clouds

Each afternoon we gaze at the sky hoping to see clouds.  Some days a few will form, but so far there has been no relief from this scorching drought.  I keep seeing things about a group planning to pray on Sunday afternoon for Rain.   I am not waiting until Sunday.  I am praying for rain every day.  I am urging my friends to all pray daily for rain.
When you look out the window at this dry land,  stop for just a moment and ask the Lord to send us rain.

Crazy Texas Weather

My husband called me just as I was about to leave town to tell me there was a bad storm near Millsap and that there was large hail in it.  So I decided to play it safe and go back to the office.  Just as I parked the hard rain started, then people from all over town started showing up to try to park their cars under the covered parking at my office.
I sat there for about 20 minutes till I got the all clear call from my husband and then the call confirming it from my parents.  We lucked out with very little hail at our place and none that I saw in town. I drove home watching the clouds, once I got home I started watching the news coverage.  We had some scary storms in North Texas and Oklahoma.  My husband kept going back out to look at the clouds.   It seemed that every few minutes another cloud was forming in our part of the county and then they blew up into huge scary storms as they moved  north east.
One Tornado touched down near Springtown and then there were reports of storms in Saginaw.  I text my friend in Springtown to see if they were OK, she assured me that all was fine.  I was a little nervous about the Saginaw storm when I couldn't get my cousin to answer.  He finally posted to FB that they were OK.
By nine o'clock I was exhausted and decided I couldn't do any one any good by worrying so I decided to call it a night.

Next Monday morning bright and early I will Leave for England, Ireland & Scotland.   The trip of a life time.  I am excited beyond words.  I will try to post some shots and updates along the way. If I can learn how to do that from my mom's iphone.  We have decided that my phone will stay at home in the states.  (Let mom & dad pay the international phone bill ;)

Good Things hapening in Weatherford

We have had an exciting weekend.  It all began on Friday night with a call from a reporter.
At about 5:00 Friday afternoon I learned that a reporter from WFAA wanted to interview my co-worker Pam.  I hung around for moral support and before it was all over I was part of the story.  The attached link is our 15 minutes of fame.
http://www.wfaa.com/news/local/Weatherford-church-raises-money-for-kidnap-torture-victim-118280129.html

Then Sunday morning during worship there were more camera crews.  This time they interviewed Cody our youth Minister.  Then Sunday afternoon they were back to interview some of our members.

This morning I have been interviewed by the Mineral Wells Index for tomorrows newspaper.  I have also spoken to several people who are wanting to donate funds or services to help.
Wow isn't this so exciting, to see the community come together to help this poor lady.

The heartbreak of the Class of 1987

In June of 1988 my life was changed forever by the death of a good friend.  One of my classmates and friends was murdered.  His name was Keith Blaylock he was a sweet kind person.  His death effected all of us in different ways.  One of the saddest ways it effected me was the fact that I realized that we were no longer children, we were thrust into adulthood.  My wonderful image of our small town life was tarnished.  We all mourned Keiths senseless death. The papers were filled with details of a robbery and murder of our dear friend, who's body was dumped on one side of town and his truck parked on the other side of town, a bank deposit missing.  It sounded more like a movie plot that real life in our community.
I am telling you all this to say that in yesterday's Mineral Wells Index there was an article stating that there has been a positive DNA match on some of the evidence found in Keith's truck.
The DNA points to another former schoolmate Brian Davis, who is currently sitting on Death Row for a 1991 murder in Houston.  I am saddened to learn that it was someone Keith knew and grew up going to school with.
Since they hadn't found the killer for all these years I had always thought they had given up on the case.  The article indicates that Davis has been a suspect from the beginning.  Davis' prior Death Penalty has been overturned.  Now the Mineral Wells & Palo Pinto authorities are going to trial in Houston this week hoping to reinstate the death penalty. The case will also be brought to the Palo Pinto County Grand Jury after the current Harris County trial in hopes they will return a murder indictment in the 1988 Murder of Keith Blaylock.
My prayer is that justice prevails and that the Blaylock family gets the closure they deserve.

If you would like to read the article you may go to http://www.mineralwellsindex.com/  the article was published  2/22/2011 It is titled Seeking Justice

A fun give away

Those of you that have been around me for any time know about my love for china & antique dishes of all types.  I acquired an wonderful new set, a place setting for 4 plus a few extra pieces.  We purchased it at an estate sale over Thanksgiving weekend.  I forgot all about this purchase until a few days ago when I stumbled across them in the back of my husbands truck.  They have been riding around in the camper since November. ( I know this is when we purchased them because my mom thought I was crazy going to an estate sale on crutches only 4 days after my knee surgery.)  I am blaming the lapse in memory on pain meds.
Last night I got to go through the box and thankfully nothing was broken.
They are a beautiful white, with a light blue floral design, accented with silver trim.  Blue Whisper, made by Sheffield.

Not a high dollar set but very pretty. I think I may gift them to a certain young lady that I love dearly who is a newly wed. Then I can add to her set as I can afford to.

I have told you all of this to lead into the following. One of my favorite blogs is having a cool giveaway.  Please visit http://myplacetoyours.blogspot.com/  and let them know you are visiting from Garner Girl.  This blog is about some of my favorite things, antiques linens, dishes and tablescapes.

I hope you all have a great day.

Blah & Boring.

I have been visiting other blogs and have decided that Garner girl is to blah & boring.  So expect some changes over the next few weeks.  One of my main complaints with my blog is the fact that I don't have enough photo's.  So just as soon as I find the cord to my camera we will remedy that.  The cord I currently have is for the old camera.

Our weekend was anything but blah & boring.  On Saturday I attended Relay University in Irving.  This is an all day intensive workshop to teach volunteers how to do their jobs as Relay For Life volunteers.  I learned some great methods of fundraising.  I also learned the proper way to end an interview.  When the interviewer ask you is there anything else you would like to add.  Don't say no or I think we have covered everything.  The proper response is to reinterate your main point.  Such as....   "Please remember that Relay for life is the largest fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.  So come out to support us on Friday May 20th, at Hall Middle School in Weatherford."

After a full day of training I went home to pickup the kids to take them to a slumber party.  When I got there I discovered that they had helped their Daddy paint a storage shed in the yard.  The oldest wore her newest jeans.  And the younger one wore one of the few pairs of pants that are still long enough.  Sometimes I wonder what their daddy is thinking when he does these projects.

So after they were dressed we started the 35 mile trip to the community center where the party was to be held.  We had an unfortunate incident with a coke along the way.  Somehow as I was sitting my large styrofoam cup in the cup holder I accidently poked a hole in the bottom of the cup, with the straw of my daughters drink that was in the other cup holder.  So here we are sitting at a red light with a fountain of coke going everywhere in the front seat of my Jeep.  I had to get it out of the car but if I went to the right I would get coke all over my daughter so I had to go to the left accross my own lap, steering wheel & door.  After I finally got it out of the car, and poured out in the street.  I used every napkin in the car trying to clean up the sticky mess.  So for the next few hours I had to wear wet jeans.

The party was fun, all the kids had a great time running and playing games.  The hit of the evening was a Wii game "just dance"  those crazy kids played it untill 2:00 AM.  Need less to say when they all finally layed down they were out!   Which was a really good thing for us moms who decided to stay and help out.  There were 17 kids spending the night, they ranged in age from 3 to 13.  Only 2 were friends from school all of the others were relatives of my cousin's little girl.  (We have a very large extended family)

Sunday morning we awoke to a room full of little girls who were ready to play the Wii again.
The mommies in attendance just wanted to sleep a little longer, but with a little coffee we were ready to start folding up bedding in preparation for the trip home.  As I was loading my Jeep I remembered the coke incident from the evening before.  My steering wheel was extremely sticky, but I did manage to get 95% of the sticky stuff off of it and the door before I had to drive home.

As I said earlier my blog may look Blah but my life is anything but boring.

A New year and I am loosing again!

I was surprised on Tuesday when I stepped on the scales.  I had lost another 2 lbs :)
Then this morning as I was getting ready for work I weighed and got a real shock.  Another 2 lbs gone, I am down to 192.4 lbs.
I was digging through my desk looking for something and found a little note card where I was recording my weight loss a couple of years ago.  We were having one of those office weight loss competitions and every time you lost you put in a dollar if you gained you put in two.  Well the very last date on that card was April 7, 2008 and I weighed 192.6.  So I guess it has been three years since I was this size.  I hope to never be this size again.
I have been released by my Doctor to return to normal activities.  Now I need to get back at the workouts so I can continue to lose.  I got a Jillian Michaels workout for the Wii for christmas.  I think I will try it tomorrow.
